The last time we met, I was toying with the idea of working from home, looking for work, doing the George Plimpton thing at an industry/professionals credentials testing center, helping seniors play every day at an assisted living/skilled nursing community, providing personal care to folks who want to stay in their homes as long as they possibly could, freelancing in photography, illustration and copywriting, and finally, seeing a viable true way to earn money that could be stashed away for whatever future I might have, I went back to work at a Job Corps site as a reading instructor for trade students ages 16-24. It is an adventure every day.
Part of the adventure is the realization that because of inflation, funerals, out-of-pocket/deductibles in health expenses and the death of my beautiful little 2012 Prius that lovingly consistently gave me 51 mph and let med drive to Delaware and back on one tank of gas - after all that, the realization was that even though I was earning a decent amount, it was simply not enough to create an elder-life stash. Never enough.
And so I begin again to find some passive income (passive-aggressive is more like it as I sputter, start, and begin again). I will fight fatigue. I will fight the emotional drainage that the adventures of my work day bring. I will fight the onslaught of oh-so-disappointing shock and awe that the new governmental administration has brought to our people. I will write, edit, photograph, illustrate, publish what I can. I will do what I can to maintain human dignity and a quality of life where people can rest their heads safely at the end of their day.
I will begin again.
